If you hear thumping in your attic at night it s most likely a larger animal such as a raccoon or opossum engaged in jumping from one area of the attic to another actively shoving or destroying something or dragging something heavy. These squirrels are most generally bringing nuts into the attic to store for the long winter.

A loose attic vent or shutter on a window can make a banging noise in the wind. Many times you can hear the noise or sounds in the attic or wall of the walnuts or acorns rolling around or being dropped down the wall cavities. You may also hear light running or scurrying noises during the day. The sounds from squirrels in the house include scurrying sounds from them running around on the drywall in the attic above the ceiling or in the walls.

Thumps are typically an indication of larger animals like opossums or raccoons. When you hear a banging coming from the attic and are trying to determine the cause you are most likely dealing with one of these four animals.
